River - the beginning • Folyó - a kezdet

Most of the times I feel lucky to have the chance to test so many styles in my drawings, but it is getting more and more confusing to impersonate different (illustrator) characters. I look forward to the moment when I will discover in my graphics the essence of …something that I am. Of course, the situation would be different if the illustrations would be individual artworks, not “just” games and if the monster of expectations would not threat us from behind.

But now, with the River, I have taken a bold step towards artistic games, and all above this: there will be no characters in it just ships, endless landscape and winding river. Very Zen, a very smooth game for kids (and adults) over five. According to my experience, most of the adults prefer this level of difficulty for themselves too. I have to agree with them. Finding out the rule is always exhaustive, so I'll leave it to the end.

We planned to refresh our palette this year, which means that I have to design about six new games. The River will be the fourth in the line - if I don't count the “Do It Yourself” set. If the next, Kingdom, will be as enormous as I imagine now, then there will be problems with the timing… and it will be the last one I can finish this year. Because "this year" only lasts until September, then the Christmas rush begins.

Néha nagyon szerencsésnek érzem magam, hogy ennyi stílust kipróbálhatok, máskor pedig fárasztónak és tudathasadásos állapotnak tartom azt, hogy megszemélyesítek különféle (grafikus) karaktereket. Mostanában inkább azt a pillanatot várom, amikor a rajzaim végre elkezdenek összekapcsolódni és kikristályosodik majd ...valami, ami én vagyok. Persze nyilván más lenne a helyzet, ha ezek önálló művészeti alkotások lennének, nem "csak" játékok és persze nem állna a hátunk mögött az elvárások fenyegető réme.

Most a Folyóval kicsit merészebb lépést tettem a művészi játékok felé ...ráadásul karakterek sem lesznek benne csak hajók, a végtelen táj és a kanyargó folyó. Nagyon Zen, nagyon szelíd játék lesz öt éven felüli gyerekeknek. Azért ennyi, mert eddigi tapasztalataim alapján a felnőttek is ezt a nehézségi fokot kedvelik. Ezzel a döntéssel egyre inkább tudok azonosulni én is. A szabály kitalálása így is biztos kimerítő lesz, ezért ez inkább most a végére hagyom.

Úgy terveztük, hogy idén felfrissítjük a palettánkat ami nagyjából hat új játék elkészítését jelenti. A River lesz a negyedik – ha nem számolom a Csináld magad szettet. Ha a következő, a Kingdom, olyan nagyszabású lesz mint ahogy most elképzelem, akkor lesznek gondok… és az lesz az utolsó, amit be tudok fejezni idén. Mert az “idén” csak szeptemberig tart, akkor kezdődik a karácsonyi rohanás.
