az új életünk • our new life

(Tisztelet a kivételeknek!)

Többen megálltak, megsimogatták, sőt le is fotózták.

It’s hard to let go of the sorrow, since it’s all that’s left binding us together with Emma. We don’t want to forget, because then we would lose her. By now we’ve cried all our tears, but everything’s not all right inside yet. Emma left us with such dignity that most wouldn’t be capable of. When we lost her, the pain wasn’t enough, we had to face all manifestations of human narrow-mindedness, be that the lack of compassion or “just” phrasing. (Kudos to the honourable exceptions!) I think very few of us know that the world is the way we ourselves create it and it is as much as we are willing to see in it. I pity those who exist only by the reflection of those compared to whom they consider themselves to be better. Be it human or animal which they have to dominate to appear as more in their own eyes.
Dogs are a lower category in this country, which also defines the prevalent intellectual standard. Outside of Hungary, we never encountered opposition if we took Emma and Janka to a restaurant, café or bakery. Here at home, the subordinance of animals is set in stone, even though more of our human peers are less well-kept, of lower standards and light years dumber (than even a prokaryote). We got a nice list of places where we can’t set foot anymore. The rate was exceptionally good only at the organic market: a lot of people were happy to see Janka, who we couldn’t leave at home since she’s so sorrowful. A lot of people stopped, pet her, they even took pictures. There was only one weak quip during our shopping round, but I brushed it off since it was evident that the woman was just provoking me. And a cute episode had taken place earlier on that aisle: A nice lady who was selling pastries asked if she can give Janka some of the edge of her organic pastry? Of course we nodded, so Janka got the edge of the pastry. And then the edge of another one, and then a whole pastry while Bojka just stood there and watched the events unheeded. :-DDDD

I have another story about Janka which perhaps explains why it’s so hard for us to forget:

One day I opened the door and saw Janka sitting alone on the doormat. I just can’t get used to the sight, so I was surprised for the umpteenth time.
- Wow, there’s ONE dog here… but where’s the other one? – I asked her the rhetorical question sadly.
Then Janka led me to Emma’s urn and showed me with her nose where “the other one” is.
